Diagnosis of Tinnitus

Diagnosis of tinnitus generally involves looking for possible causes of the tinnitus. Your provider will examine your ears to look for blockage in the ear canal or other symptoms of ear or sinus infection. They may also examine your head and neck for possible causes.
You may be asked to move your eyes, clench your jaw, or move your neck, arms, and legs. If tinnitus changes or worsens with movement, it may help identify an underlying condition that needs treatment. Imaging tests such as a CT or MRI scan may also be ordered. Your provider may refer you to an otolaryngologist or audiologist to determine if your tinnitus is associated with any hearing loss.
