Patient Safety Professional (PS Prof) Course

This page outlines the role, competencies, and resources for patient safety professionals, including patient safety managers.

As a patient safety professional, your role is to collaborate with staff, leadership, and other patient safety, quality, and process improvement personnel to promote a culture of safety. This includes activities such as analyzing and identifying trends from adverse event reports; supporting educational programs in patient safety; helping spread leading practices from adverse events; and developing, implementing, and evaluating patient safety initiatives.

To fill this role successfully, you will need the following competencies:

  • Human factors.
  • Systems approach.
  • Safety culture.
  • Quality management.
  • Performance improvement.
  • Data collection, analysis and feedback.
  • Risk identification and mitigation.

In addition to the classroom portion of the course, participants will be expected to complete approximately four to six hours of pre-work prior to attending the course and take part in online continuing professional development and feedback sessions for 12 months following the course. This course is fully accredited through the Postgraduate Institute for Medicine and the following credits are available: ACHE, ACPE, CERP, CME, CCNE, APA, and IACET CEU.
