Program Description

The National Capital Consortium's Premier Military Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship

Forging Leaders in Active Health Care

The National Capital Consortium's Military Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship boasts a distinguished tradition of training elite military physicians. This rigorous one-year program equips fellows with the expertise to deliver exceptional non-surgical care and education to athletes of all levels.

A Legacy of Excellence: Nurturing Leaders in Military Sports Medicine

Established in 1994, the National Capital Consortium's Military Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship has flourished into the nation's largest program, graduating eight fellows annually. Our distinguished alumni include numerous leaders and scholars in military sports medicine, representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard.

This legacy of excellence is further solidified by our graduates' perfect pass rate with the highest scores in the nation on the American Board of Family Medicine exam in Sports Medicine. They consistently achieve the top national board scores among all sports medicine fellowships, earning them the coveted Certificate of Added Qualifications. This exceptional achievement reflects the program's commitment to rigor and its dedication to developing the next generation of military sports medicine leaders.

A Collaborative Powerhouse: Fostering Excellence Through Partnership

The fellowship thrives at A.T. Augusta Military Medical Center, forging a strong alliance with the Family Medicine Residency program. This core collaboration receives invaluable support from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) Department of Family Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland.

However, the program's excellence extends far beyond its own walls. We cultivate a vibrant learning community through robust academic partnerships with Inova-Fairfax's Sports Medicine Fellowship, MedStar Georgetown's Emergency Medicine Sports Fellowship, MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital's PM&R Sports Fellowship, and the University of Virginia's Sports Fellowship.

This multi-institutional approach fosters a rich exchange of knowledge and expertise. Military fellows and six civilian fellows benefit from shared didactic lectures, hands-on ultrasound training, pre-participation physicals, and comprehensive event coverage. This collaborative environment ensures fellows gain exposure to a diverse range of perspectives and best practices, preparing them for success in the field.

World-Class Curriculum

The fellowship's multi-disciplinary faculty delivers a comprehensive and diverse curriculum, both formal and informal.

Highlights include

  • Over 150 hours of intensive, hands-on musculoskeletal ultrasound training.
  • More than 7 hours of weekly didactic sports medicine lectures and small group sessions.
  • A two-day ultrasound-guided injection cadaver course for practical skill development.
  • A two-day orthobiologic course featuring renowned national and international speakers.

Weekly exposure to a full spectrum of sports medicine practices, including cutting-edge orthobiologic techniques like platelet-rich plasma, prolotherapy, nerve hydrodissection, and percutaneous ultrasonic tenotomy procedures.

This exceptional program empowers military physicians to become leaders in active healthcare, delivering superior care to active individuals across all ages and skill levels.
