Walter Reed’s NICoE Scientists to Present New TBI Battlefield Biomarkers Research During 2023 MHSRS

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center is pleased to announce that researchers from the National Intrepid Center of Excellence will present a groundbreaking study on diagnosing traumatic brain injuries during the 2023 Military Health System Research Symposium taking place Aug. 14-17, 2023 at the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center in Kissimmee, Florida.

Elevating Diagnostic Research, Improving Outcomes for Patients with Mild TBIs

Dr. Ping-Hong Yeh, who completed his post-doctoral studies at the University of California, San Francisco, has spent more than a decade studying biomarkers that inform health care workers with vital information in diagnosing and treating TBIs. "I feel blessed to have the opportunity to work in an environment that allows me to help injured warriors," Yeh emphasized. He’s determined to improve outcomes for those overcoming brain trauma caused by the concussive strength of the weapons of war, especially improvised explosive devices.

According to the National Institutes of Health, the current lag in TBI incidence and hospitalization can be reduced if digital biomarkers such as hard fall detection are standardized and used as a mechanism to alert paramedics to an unresponsive trauma patient. Yeh and his colleagues are on a mission to turn the tide on mild TBIs, which may cause a wide range of debilitating outcomes - including headaches, dizziness, tinnitus, loss of memory and major mood swings.

2017 MHSRS Individual Award, Active Duty

Vice Admiral Raquel C. Bono, director of the Defense Health Agency, presented U.S. Army Major Steven Schauer with the 2017 Individual Research Accomplishment for active duty service members, in the category of Military Operational Medicine, today at the Military Health System (MHS) Research Symposium. The Individual Research Accomplishment award recognizes outstanding contributions by an individual scientist that had a high impact on MHS research within the past year.  Schauer is an emergency medicine physician assigned to the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research. Over the past year, and while deployed, he made several significant contributions to military operational medicine through multiple research projects and policy recommendations.

Morris, M.D. with the 2017 Individual Research Accomplishment for civilians, in the category of Occupational Medicine, today at the Military Health System (MHS) Research Symposium. The Individual Research Accomplishment award recognizes outstanding contributions by an individual scientist that had a high impact on MHS research within the past year.  Morris is recognized today for his ongoing research investigating the effects of deployment on respiratory health.

Bono, director of the Defense Health Agency, presented Veena Taneja, Ph.D. with the 2017 Individual Research Accomplishment for academia, in the category of Precision Medicine, today at the Military Health System (MHS) Research Symposium. The Individual Research Accomplishment award recognizes outstanding contributions by an individual scientist that had a high impact on MHS research within the past year.  Taneja is an Associate Professor in the Department of Immunology at the Mayo Clinic, and her research centers on understanding the role of the immune system in the development of rheumatoid arthritis. She is recognized today for her research that discovered a new biomarker that can be used to treat inflammatory arthritis.
